201 - “Sustainable Development”, “Sustainability”, “Green”, “Eco Friendly” — What does it all mean, where did it come from, and how do you know if your building is!

Sponsored by

The green building movement is awash with buzzwords, jargon and planet saving claims and most organizations are changing or have changed the way they do business to take account of increasing demand for green products. But do you know where the idea of “sustainable development” first came from and what it means? Once you know what sustainable development is and that you want it, how do you define it, measure it and ensure that you get it. This presentation will help you find your way through the maze of the green building industry, including a summary of how the subject is approached around the world.

203 - BIM in Action: Lessons Learned and Efficiencies Gained

Building Information Modelllng (BIM) is a design approach that has been growing in popularity in the design, construction and facility management communities over the past several years. Most consultants in the design community are familiar with BIM, however as owners learn the advantages of this technology, it will be required for designers and constructors to deliver projects with BIM more often.

Through a series of 3 short presentations by representatives of the design community, the audience will be introduced to the concept of BIM, shown the advantages and disadvantages of the approach and presented case studies of projects designed and delivered with BIM.

204 - Prime Contractor and Liability Issues

Despite it's being part of the Occupational Health and Safety regime in Alberta for many years, there have not been any cases before the Alberta courts to spell out what a Prime Contractor actually is, the extent of their obligations and how they are to meet them. As such, numerous and considerable questions remain: is Prime Contractor an on-going obligation? Is there a requirement to monitor others' performance on a worksite? If so, does this obligation continue?

Further, Prime Contractor means different things to different people: do you want to be the Prime? How do you ensure you don't get forced to be the Prime? Is there a difference for residential vs. commercial sites?

This panel will include legal, residential and commercial perspectives on these questions and more.

206 - Competency Certification

Presented by

When you hire someone, how do you know they can do what they claim to do? BOMA has introduced a program of competency certification in Floor Measurement using internationally recognized processes. Most landlord/tenant disputes are related to misunderstandings around the measurement of space and the payment of rent & operating costs using wrongly calculated areas. Competency certification provides both the landlord and the tenant with a risk management tool through certifying measurement professionals in 74 separate competencies associated with the process of measurement. Getting things right will protect the measurement professional, the landlord and the tenant and reduce disputes that may lead to arbitration or worse, court.

207 - From Better to Best: Building an Environmental Management System for Your Building and your Operating Team

Presented by

With the public, including tenants, becoming increasingly skeptical about environmental claims of all sorts, it is vitally important for building owners and managers to incorporate an environmental management system into their operations. This means building performance must be observable and measurable to give your “environmental certification” the credibility to make tenants see the environmental benefits of building performance. This session will outline the key components of an environmental management system based on recognized national industry standards, the terms of measurement and the evidence of environmental performance.

215 - Domestic Lux — Lighting the Green Home

Sponsored by

Lighting remains the most ephemeral and powerful means at the designer’s disposal for orchestrating space and emphasizing texture and material. While the means and technology available have changed dramatically over the past decade, the challenge remains: how does one apply lighting in the service of a design concept and not allow the technology to take center stage? With the current emphasis on energy efficient light sources and cradle-to-grave environmental impact analysis, the equation becomes a delicate balance of color, light quality, and energy. In this seminar, a general overview of current trends in lighting and legislation will be paired with a presentation of technical terms and equipment, allowing the designer to judge for themselves the best approach to green lighting. The focus of the seminar will be residential lighting, as this is, without doubt, the most sensitive and difficult area to integrate energy efficient lighting while meeting clients’ expectations.
